The solid walnut top is inlaid with ginkgo leaves of Cascara,
a native of the Pacific Northwest. The walnut came from an
urban tree in Tacoma.

November in Washington is all about yellow leaves and wind.

I've created two pieces in walnut with Ginkgo biloba leaves. The ginkgo patterns evoke the feel of
leaves whirling around in the wind. I have two Ginkgo trees myself. I used leaves from  these trees as
models for my inlay. I wanted the leaves to have that beautiful yellow color they take on in the Fall and
discovered that Cascara wood is a good choice. It has a yellowish color that is not too brash and
matches the dark walnut really well.

It took awhile, but I finally got the leaves arranged so that they look like they are whirling around in the
wind or swirling on top of a pond.

Ginkgo leaves from the same tree are quite variable in shape. A good metaphor for today's society.
Ginkgo Leaf Table
Walnut  and Cascara.

The top was created as a grid of shop sawn curly walnut veneers, each grid square set at right
angles to the others to give a light-dark effect. The walnut has very, very rich tones of brown and
red. The walnut was from Oregon.
